"Studying abroad is an immensely positive experience in your life that you will cherish forever as long as you let it be that for yourself. Living in another country, another culture, another family will make you think about things you had back home and might miss (or don't miss). Regardless, the focus shouldn't be on those things; it should be fixated on the place you occupy, on building a relationship with it, knowing it. Studying abroad offers you a chance to take a step (or several) outside of whatever territory, literally and metaphorically, you were familiar with, to thoroughly enrich your life as well as those of others who will be part of your experience, and to gain a much deeper understanding of that place you came from along the way. A study abroad experience is especially relevant to the polarized social-political climate that often exists in the states. Removing myself from such an environment for a little while has better equipped me to employ empathy and understanding in conversations with people from all backgrounds, and has made me less quick to judge someone for or be offended by something they've said."
