  • Overview

History could not exist as a discipline without the use of concepts. These are the main analytical tools of the historian, applied to the raw materials of historical research. It is by applying concepts that we can explore common themes in history and understand the causes and consequences of historical transformations.

Throughout this module, historians will introduce you to key historical concepts and talk you through their use in historical settings relevant to their own expertise. You will then have the opportunity to do the work of the historian in your seminar discussions by using primary sources relating to the setting to think about the concepts more broadly.   This approach will allow you to explore a wide variety of historical ideas, periods and places.

Through the study of particular concepts such as class, race and gender, you will come to understand that History intersects with other academic disciplines. This module will therefore appeal to students across the humanities and social science subjects who want to deepen their understanding of the concepts which they will encounter in their main subject at university.
